Abode of Lord Shiva in the Snowy Himalayas

Set amid the spectacular landscapes of the Garhwal Himalayas, Kedarnath is a destination of immense religious significance for Hindu pilgrims and spiritual seekers. Surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks, the sacred town is home to the Kedarnath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Located in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand at an altitude of approximately 3,580 metres above sea level, Kedarnath forms one of the four pilgrimage destinations of Uttarakhand's Char Dham circuit, along with Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. The temple stands near the source region of the Mandakini River and is among the more challenging pilgrimage sites to reach because of its high-altitude location and trekking route.

According to tradition, Adi Guru Shankaracharya played a significant role in establishing or reviving the shrine during the eighth century. The temple is also associated with the Pandavas of the Mahabharata, who are believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva here to seek forgiveness for the bloodshed of the Kurukshetra war.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kedarnath Temple is a remarkable example of traditional stone architecture. Built with massive, evenly cut grey stone slabs on a rectangular platform, the structure inspires admiration for the craftsmanship involved in constructing a substantial stone building in a challenging mountainous environment. The temple's inner assembly hall features figures of deities and scenes from Hindu mythology.

Attractions in Kedarnath
Kedarnath Temple
Kedarnath Temple is the principal attraction of the sacred town. Set against a dramatic backdrop of Himalayan peaks, the ancient shrine is revered as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and an important destination in the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit.

The present temple is traditionally associated with Adi Guru Shankaracharya, while Hindu legend attributes the construction of an earlier shrine to the Pandavas. Its massive stone walls, traditional architecture and distinctive Shiva lingam make it a major centre of religious devotion.

Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi
Located behind Kedarnath Temple, the Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi commemorates the celebrated Hindu philosopher and spiritual teacher. Tradition holds that Shankaracharya attained samadhi at Kedarnath at the age of 32. He is remembered for his contribution to Advaita Vedanta and for revitalising Hindu philosophical and pilgrimage traditions.

Excursions around Kedarnath
Chorabari Tal (Gandhi Sarovar)
Chorabari Tal, also known as Gandhi Sarovar, is a glacial lake situated near Kedarnath. The lake is associated with the surrounding Himalayan landscape and offers striking views of the mountains on clear days. Some of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were immersed here in 1948, giving the lake its alternative name.

The lake is reached by a trek from Kedarnath. Visitors should check local weather, trail accessibility and official advisories before setting out.

Vasuki Tal
Situated at an altitude of approximately 4,150 metres, Vasuki Tal is a high-altitude lake surrounded by rugged Himalayan terrain. The lake offers magnificent views of the Chaukhamba peaks and the Mandakini valley.

Reaching Vasuki Tal involves a demanding uphill trek of approximately 8 km from Kedarnath. Its elevation and challenging terrain make appropriate preparation, favourable weather and attention to local trekking advice essential.

Gaurikund
Gaurikund, in Rudraprayag district, serves as the traditional starting point for the trek to Kedarnath. It is an important pilgrimage destination in its own right, with a temple dedicated to Goddess Gauri, another name for Parvati.

The locality is also known for its natural hot-water sulphur springs, which pilgrims have traditionally used for ritual bathing. The trekking route from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is approximately 16 km, although route measurements and arrangements may vary.

Sonprayag
Sonprayag is an important stop on the road leading towards Gaurikund and Kedarnath. Situated in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand, it is associated with the confluence of the Mandakini and Basuki Ganga rivers.

The site holds religious significance for pilgrims travelling to Kedarnath. Local traditions attach spiritual importance to its sacred waters, although beliefs about religious merit should be understood within their devotional context.

Triyuginarayan Temple
Triyuginarayan is a village in Uttarakhand renowned for its temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. According to Hindu tradition, it is the place where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were married, with Lord Vishnu believed to have witnessed the divine ceremony.

The temple is particularly famous for its sacred fire, known as the Akhand Dhuni, which devotees believe has been burning since the divine wedding. The site attracts pilgrims as well as visitors interested in Hindu mythology, religious architecture and the cultural traditions of the Garhwal Himalayas.
