Do’s And Don’ts Of Traveling In India

Jog Falls

India is one of the oldest civilizations in the world. Many of India’s cities date back millenniums. But what sets Indian civilization apart from those of Egypt, Mesopotamia and Greece is that its tradition has been preserved uninterrupted to the present day. In short, India is the oldest continuous cultural tradition in the world.

India may be changing fast, but it’s still a society respectful of its ancient traditions. Showing respect for local customs will make your travels more hassle-free and enjoyable. Here are some travelling tips to help you avoid a gaffe.

Dos

All travellers to India must be in possession of a valid visa. Citizens of Nepal and Bhutan are exempted from possessing visa.

Remove your shoes when entering a temple, tomb, dargah or Gurudwara. Avoid taking leather goods of any kind into temples as these can often cause offence.

Bargaining is an art long practiced in local bazaars selling products without a marked price. So feel free to ask for a proper discount when shopping in places where prices are not written.

Be careful in dealing with sidewalk vendors trying to sell you semi-precious and precious gems and jewelry. It is advisable to visit state emporia and the Central Cottage Industries Emporia for fixed prices

Ensure you have sufficient travel insurance papers that it covers medical care and other unexpected incidents in a foreign land.

Don’ts

Do not offer to handshake a person of the opposite sex unless they initiate first. However, the elite Indians are very familiar with Western habits, usages and social mores.

Do not walk around alone at odd hours if you are a woman.

Photography is prohibited inside the inner sanctum of many places of worship. Don't take photographs of women without asking.

Use your right hand for greeting, eating, and passing objects.

Don't give unreasonable tips to waiters, tour guides and drivers.

Don’t give any money to the beggars. Don’t smile and maintain eye contact with them.

Avoid pointing with your index finger. It is considered as a sign of annoyance.
